Westminster’s Outreach initiatives reflect our focus on Embracing Our Community. Here are just a few of the important works of Outreach Committee members:

St. Vincent’s Kitchen

St. Vincent’s Pallotti’s Kitchen and Store was opened in October 1990 by the organization, Durham Outlook for the Needy. The kitchen, located at the corner of King and Albert streets in Oshawa, serves low cost meals in a dignified manner to 150 to 200 needy people daily, seven days a week. Westminster is one of over 46 churches that provides volunteers to serve the food and help with the kitchen clean up the first Wednesday of each month. Additional volunteers are always welcome. For more information about St. Vincent’s Kitchen visit their website at www.stvincentskitchen.com

WHAM After School Program

WHAM, which stands for Whitby, Homework, Activities and Mentoring, is a special after school program, offering children ages 6 to 12, homework help, healthy snacks, exercise, as well as a variety of otheractivities in a welcoming and safe environment. The program, held at Westminster United Church, has worked in partnership with the Durham Regional Police since its inception in 2007. In the fall of 2009, the Eastview Boys and Girls Club was welcomed as a partner. The WHAM After School Program continues to be enriched with many volunteers committed to enhancing the lives of the young participants. Dedicated police officers also volunteer to mentor the children in a positive setting. Volunteers of all ages (16 years +) are required for refreshment preparation, offering assistance in the gym, helping with crafts and homework or playing a board game. This can be a great way for high school students to earn community hours. Beginning in September 2010, the program will run Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 3:00 to 6:00. The yearly $50.00
registration fee includes a membership to the Boys and Girls Club. For information, call the church or email durhamwham@hotmail.com.

DivorceCare

DivorceCare is a special weekly seminar and support group for people who are separated or divorced, and is one of the many Outreach programs sponsored by our church. This is a non-denominational program that includes videos featuring biblical teachings presented by recognized experts on divorce and recovery topics. The participants become part of a small group of people who are also experiencing separation and divorce. There are ten individual topics which are designed so that participants can begin at any week and not have to wait for the beginning of the next series. Each participant (if they wish), will have the opportunity to talk about the information presented during each weekly video, and to discuss and share other
concerns that they are experiencing in their daily life.It is often by interacting with others who understand what you arefeeling and are able to offer you support and encouragement that you will begin to learn how to deal with the pain of the past and look forward to rebuilding your life.If you or someone you know would benefit from DivorceCare, or wish more information, please contact Carolle Kennedy-Harding at
905-723-6685.
