Following
the ministry of Jesus, we are called to
promote physical, mental and spiritual health
within our Christian family and the community
we serve. Our wellness initiatives include:
Living Alone Luncheon
The
Living Alone Group began as a group of mostly
widowed women living alone who decided to
gather monthly for lunch. The group has
grown to include both women and men who
gather on the last Wednesday of the month
for a catered lunch and cards (Euchre) afterward.
The
Prayer Shawl Ministry
The
Prayer Shawl Ministry came to Westminster
United Church in the spring of 2004 after
Rev. Christopher Whites visit to a
small church in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Rev.
White told us about this churchs Prayer
Shawl Ministry and brought back a shawl
to show the congregation. He felt it was
something the people of Westminster could
embrace as part of our outreach mission.
The
U.C.W. took up the challenge for Westminster
to provide shawls to anyone in need. To
start, the shawls were knitted 3 plain,
3 pearl stitches representing the 3 Stations
of the Cross. However, many women in the
congregation could not knit but wanted to
be involved in this ministry so we developed
our own ministry to include everyone who
could knit or crochet and many wonderful
colours and designs are now being received.
Weve
taken our ministry one step further: our
Prayer Shawls are now given to all who are
baptized at Westminster, whether baby, child
or adult.
Our
Prayer Shawls have been so gratefully received
that we now have people knitting for us
who arent members of our church, but
feel they want to be part of our ministry.
Some of these people have received Westminster
shawls themselves and want to give back
to others. If youd like to join our
group, you are most welcome at any time.
Wooland patterns are available after Sunday
services and there is no time
limit for completing a shawl.
As
a small token of our appreciation and gratitude
for the many long hours spent completing
a shawl, all participants will be invited
to present a shawl at one of our baptismal
services or present on behalf of one of
our friends.
If
you know someone in need of the warmth and
prayers woven into our Prayer Shawls, please
contact the church office.
When
someone needs some tenderness
Someone to hold a hand
Someone to say a thoughtful word
When they are scared or sad
A shawl surrounds their shoulder
A shawl with warmth and care
A shawl thats made with loving hands
A shawl from us to share.
Stroke
Recovery Group
The
Westminster Stroke Recovery Group is a member
run support group offering support, encouragement
and education to stroke survivors and their
caregivers. The group meets on Tuesdays
in the Founders Room from 1:00-3:00pm.
Volunteers to assist with refreshments and
set up always welcome!
Environmental
Committee
The
Westminster Environment Committee educates,
promotes, participates, and believes in
reuse, reduce, and recycle. We celebrate
our world and hope to excite the congregation
about some commitments we can make to solutions
to climate change. We have a receptacle
in our Narthex beside the Welcome Table
to allow us
to leave our used batteries for proper disposal.
We have also been successful in getting
our Board of Management to ban bottled water
from Westminster.
